{"id":2033,"date":"2012-01-15T08:32:45","date_gmt":"2012-01-15T08:32:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/poiseddevelopers.com\/reality-tech\/?p=2033"},"modified":"2024-05-13T10:47:17","modified_gmt":"2024-05-13T10:47:17","slug":"changing-mysite-links","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/poiseddevelopers.com\/reality-tech\/changing-mysite-links\/","title":{"rendered":"Changing Mysite Links"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When the User Profile Service is configured, settings are configured for the default location for all MySites, as well as the associated search location.<\/p>\n<p>These two URLs are managed for all MySites; both current and MySites are yet to be created.<\/p>\n<p>If you try to change these values, you may find that the changes do not &#8220;stick&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I was faced with a farm that had Web Applications originally created that referred explicitly to the Web Front End (WFE) server using a port number.<\/p>\n<p>Moving to all friendly URLs instead of server names has the following advantages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Disaster Recovery (DR)<br \/>\nYou can route a DNS based URL to a different server, if need be<\/li>\n<li>Easier load balancing<br \/>\nThe DNS can route to a Virtual IP (VIP) supported by Microsoft Server 2008, or via a dedicated hardware solution (such as a F5\u00a0BigIP or Kemp)<\/li>\n<li>Shorter URLs<br \/>\nLong URLs create problems a bit quicker, due to length restrictions.\u00a0 This most often occurs through deeply nested folder names in SharePoint.<\/li>\n<li>User Friendly URLs<br \/>\nEnabling users to type &#8220;SharePoint&#8221;, &#8220;Search&#8221;, &#8220;MySite&#8221; or &#8220;Intranet&#8221; into the browser makes the user experience that much easier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Adding a friendly DNS name is easily done through Alternate Access Method (AAM), but getting the friendly Web Application name into the User Profile Service took a bit of research.<\/p>\n<p>To change these settings:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go into Central Admin<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;Manage Service Applications&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;User Profile Service&#8221; (yours could have a different name, depending on what was chosen during installation)<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;Setup My Sites&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Update the URLs for Search and MySite Location<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2049 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/poiseddevelopers.com\/reality-tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mysites1.png\" alt=\"mysites1\" width=\"902\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/poiseddevelopers.com\/reality-tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mysites1.png 902w, https:\/\/poiseddevelopers.com\/reality-tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mysites1-300x135.png 300w, https:\/\/poiseddevelopers.com\/reality-tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mysites1-768x345.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 902px) 100vw, 902px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, if your new URLs are not in the default zone, you are in for a surprise. It turns out, that the User Profile Service actually pokes into the URLs you enter, and changes them back to the Default Zone for the URL.<\/p>\n<p>How to fix?<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s change the Default Zone, by going into AAM:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go into Central Admin<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;Application Management&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;Alternate Access Methods&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Select your Web Application from the drop-down on the right<\/li>\n<li>Edit Public URLs<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2052 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/poiseddevelopers.com\/reality-tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mysites2.png\" alt=\"mysites2\" width=\"913\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/poiseddevelopers.com\/reality-tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mysites2.png 913w, https:\/\/poiseddevelopers.com\/reality-tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mysites2-300x103.png 300w, https:\/\/poiseddevelopers.com\/reality-tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mysites2-768x262.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 913px) 100vw, 913px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are a total of five zones available. The &#8220;Default&#8221; zone is where you want your new friendly name to reside. Note above that the &#8220;MySiteDev&#8221; is entered twice.\u00a0 The second time as a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN).<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s best practice as fall-back for non-standard access to your sites; the FQDN is often a default trusted site in browsers in companies.<\/p>\n<p>Now let&#8217;s make sure IIS is configured to handle your URLs:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Logon to your SharePoint server<\/li>\n<li>Open IIS<\/li>\n<li>Open the Web Application<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;Edit Bindings&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2055 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/poiseddevelopers.com\/reality-tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mysites3.webp\" alt=\"mysites3\" width=\"722\" height=\"476\" srcset=\"https:\/\/poiseddevelopers.com\/reality-tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mysites3.webp 722w, https:\/\/poiseddevelopers.com\/reality-tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mysites3-300x198.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 722px) 100vw, 722px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before you start:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>For multiple WFEs, you will need to make the change to each WFE<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the new friendly DNS names are created<br \/>\nA Records are best for several reasons, including they will be required if you use or will migrate to Kerberos<\/li>\n<li>An IISReset is required<br \/>\nAt the very least the Web Application\/Application Pools will need recycling.\u00a0 A reboot is always best.<\/li>\n<li>Have your backup\/restore strategy in place<br \/>\nAt the very least, keep your notes of all changes.\u00a0 Note\u00a0a server snapshot and a farm config DB backup is highly recommended.<\/li>\n<li>Test first in Development<br \/>\nDo it all in Development first. I heard a very wise MVP once say &#8220;If you say you don&#8217;t have a Development Environment, what you really mean is that you don&#8217;t have a Production Environment!&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When the User Profile Service is configured, settings are configured for the default location for all MySites, as well as the associated search location.
