{"id":2122,"date":"2011-12-06T07:31:39","date_gmt":"2011-12-06T07:31:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/poiseddevelopers.com\/reality-tech\/?p=2122"},"modified":"2024-04-12T10:07:53","modified_gmt":"2024-04-12T10:07:53","slug":"rbs-remote-blob-storage-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/poiseddevelopers.com\/reality-tech\/rbs-remote-blob-storage-part-1\/","title":{"rendered":"RBS (Remote Blob Storage) part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Remote Blob Storage (RBS) is a Microsoft technology for managing large BLOBs (Binary Large Objects) in SQL Server and is fully supported within SharePoint 2010.\u00a0 This technology basically allows you to take the large binary files that are expensive to maintain within a database, and offload them to a separate drive.<\/p>\n<p>Who needs RBS?\u00a0 You may need it if you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have very large Content Databases (100GB+)<\/li>\n<li>Have a content mix that includes a large proportion of streaming media<\/li>\n<li>Your content is large (1TB+)<\/li>\n<li>You have more than one tier of storage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Few people actually use RBS as implemented by Microsoft.\u00a0 Most users who need RBS simply pay for 3rd party software (StoragePoint\/Metalogix or DocAve extender) which is the easy way to go.\u00a0 However there are some drawbacks to this approach:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-uw-rm-sr=\"\">You\u2019ll pay heavily for licensing. $7k-$14k per administrator\/front end is typical, plus maintenance<\/li>\n<li>The complication of going with yet another vendor<\/li>\n<li>Vendor lock-in: it\u2019s hard to change vendors when you have a production system set up with huge volumes of data stored via proprietary drivers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To be fair, the third-party vendors offer a few advantages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Arguably more responsive support<\/li>\n<li>More refined and customizable criteria for what content stays in the database and what gets moved into RBS<\/li>\n<li>Better administration and maintenance interfaces<\/li>\n<li>Better documentation: Microsoft\u2019s RBS documentation leaves a lot of opportunity (putting it mildly)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Well, that\u2019s the very high level view; for those intrepid souls looking to leverage Microsoft\u2019s RBS, I\u2019m going to walk through all the steps to set up, configure and administer RBS.<\/p>\n<p>Check out\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reality-tech.com\/rbs-remote-blob-storage-part-2\/\" style=\"color:#1f6799\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RBS Part 2<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remote Blob Storage (RBS) is a Microsoft technology for managing large BLOBs (Binary Large Objects) in SQL Server and is fully supported within SharePoint 2010.\u00a0 This technology basically allows you to take the large binary files that are expensive to maintain within a database, and offload them to a separate drive.
