Case study: Dot Net
New Tech for Performance, Security, Efficiency and Integration
Case Study at a Glance
CLIENT
A North American-based environmental services company specializing in waste treatment, disposal & storage
THE PROBLEM
An important internal application had reached end of life, making it hard to upgrade, limiting performance, and exposing potential vulnerabilities in security.
THE VERTEX SOLUTION
An upgraded technology stack of C#, .net, MS SQL Server, Azure App Services, Azure Blob Storage, Visual Studio and AG Grid that would improve both system performance & security, and be easier to enhance.
THE RESULTS
An updated application that met new requirements, was easier to maintain and upgrade, offering enhanced security, performance and flawless integration with other corporate systems.
Problem and Background
Our client, a North American-based environmental services company specializing in waste treatment, disposal & storage, had a legacy ERP system used for risk management, scheduling, pricing, and invoicing waste pickups. The system was built in Visual Basic (VB) with Telerik controls many years ago.
As time passed, it became more difficult for our client to find developers with VB and Telerik experience. Furthermore, the technology stack was not scalable, limiting performance, and offering only limited security capabilities. The system needed an update that would allow enhancements as well as increase performance and security.
The Vertex Solution
Vertex Computer Systems assessed the client’s ERP system and worked closely with their team to uncover new requirements and use cases for the system that were not able to be implemented in the old system.
We proposed an upgraded technology stack of C#, the .net Framework (v4.6.2), MS SQL Server, Azure App Services, Azure Blob Storage, Visual Studio and AG Grid (a custom Javascript framework integrates with Angular, React and Vue) that would improve both system performance & security, and would be easier to enhance. Like its predecessor application, the system would integrate with Salesforce (used for customer account information and profiling) and Oracle.
Our team made a deep dive into some of the system’s stored procedures and fine-tuned them to increase performance. In addition to the basic system migration, more than a dozen new enhancements were added, increasing system usability and efficiency for the users.
AG Grid was an important part of the system upgrade as it was able to handle more data than Telerik and made it easier for users to access the data that was already there.
Key Takeaways, Benefits and Results
The new system benefitted from the updated technology stack and the knowledge of the Vertex team.
Not only did the new system offer higher performance and security, it also offered flawless integration with our customers’ other systems, increased the efficiency of the customer service team, and it was easier to maintain and upgrade.
New data management and visualization tools also increased efficiency and opened new insights into customers and business practices.
Why Vertex?
Vertex brought extensive experience with AG Grid and its complexities, as well as a solid grounding in business workflow processes. As such, our team was able to create the new application with all of its security and performance requirements against a challenging deadline.
Are there applications for this solution in other places or industries?
Any company with outdated, disconnected systems that are struggling with performance, security, and the ability to upgrade would benefit from migration to newer technologies.
